Spring Clean Your Water System

Updated: Nov 28, 2019

Now the camping season is now starting up, it is advisable to sterilise your water system and give the inside of your Caravan or Motorhome some TLC. No doubt you have already cleaned and polished the exterior.

You have probably noticed a musty smell when opening the door to your caravan or motorhome for the first time this season, this is the time to clean and sterilise your water system so that you can be sure that the water you use and drink is nice and clean. To do this close all the taps and valves then add a cleaning agent such as Puriclean to your fresh water tank and fill with water. Turn on the taps one at a time starting with the one furthest from your water tank, when the water runs through without spluttering and you are able to smell the cleaning agent turn the tap off and leave the solution in the pipes for up to 12 hours, this will throughly sterilise your water pipes as well as the tank.

On returning the following day turn on the water so that you are running the water through to your grey water tank, then fill the fresh water tank up again and keep running the water through the taps until you can no longer smell the cleaning agent. The lack of scent of the cleaning agent is a sign that the pipes and water are clean, then empty your grey water tank. It is also worth changing your water filters at this point.

To Clean your Aquaroll simply put four heaped teaspoons of bicarbonate of soda into your Aquaroll, fill with water then either shake or roll the Aquaroll gently and leave it for 24 hours. After this time simply empty it and rinse throughly with fresh water. This should be done regularly to keep your Aquaroll clean and be able to use it for many years.

Cleaning you toilet cassette regularly will also prolong it's life, cleaning it with specialist cleaners, such as Thetford's cassette tank cleaner. Follow the instructions, using around 5 litres of luke warm water to 300ml of cleaner, gently swill the tank so it coats the inside, then leave for sixteen hours occasionally rocking it gently, empty and then rinse with fresh water.
